At MDC Automotive Repair, we don't believe in guessing.
Every transmission diagnosis begins with gathering information.
Road Test
We drive the vehicle under the same conditions described by the customer.
During the road test we evaluate:
- Shift timing
- Shift feel
- Converter clutch operation
- Engagement into Drive and Reverse
- Vehicle speed
- Engine performance
- Transmission temperature
- Unusual noises and vibrations
Sometimes the concern only occurs under load, while towing, or after the vehicle reaches operating temperature. Those details help us narrow the diagnosis.
Computer Diagnosis
Modern transmissions rely on computers, sensors, and electronically controlled hydraulic systems.
We connect professional scan equipment to monitor live transmission data, including:
- Input and output speed sensors
- Shift solenoid operation
- Transmission fluid temperature
- Gear commanded versus actual gear
- Line pressure commands
- Torque converter clutch operation
- Adaptation values
- Diagnostic trouble codes
Reading a code is only the beginning. Understanding why the code set is what leads to an accurate repair.
Electrical Testing
Many transmission complaints are electrical rather than mechanical.
We inspect:
- Wiring harnesses
- Connectors
- Solenoid circuits
- Grounds
- Power supplies
- Communication networks
Electrical problems can often imitate internal transmission failures.
Hydraulic Diagnosis
Automatic transmissions operate using hydraulic pressure.
When necessary we perform:
- Line pressure testing
- Cooler flow testing
- Valve body evaluation
- Solenoid testing
Hydraulic testing allows us to determine whether the problem is mechanical, hydraulic, or electronic.
